1999 Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen has worked hard to make itself one of the best vehicle manufacturers of today. The quality of the vehicles that they make is known worldwide and most consumers would not hesitate to purchase any Volkswagen vehicle. While the Volkswagen owners and shareholders may revel in their excellent reputation now, it should be noted that it was not always like this.
There was a time when Volkswagen did not tick all the boxes and consumers were more than a little reluctant to part with their cash if the exchange was for a Volkswagen vehicle. Luckily by the time the 1999 Volkswagen Passat was introduced, things were ‘on the up’, however it still had its fair share of problems, namely the braking system, windshield and radio.
- Braking system: apparently, the 1999 Volkswagen Passat was built with very thin rotors. This meant that if a customer allowed their brake pads to run low, they run the risk of damaging the rotors very easily which could be very costly to fix, especially if they are being damaged every time the pad are low. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much that owners could do except for listening out for squeaking or crunching noises whenever they pressed the brakes. Any squeaking or crushing was an indication that the pads needed to be changed quickly to avoid the need to replace the rotors.
- Windshield: technically, the problems reported with the 1999 Volkswagen Passat windshield was not Volkswagen’s fault, but it is still worth mentioning. It seems that new vehicles were cleaned with Armor All, which is quite thoughtful. However, the chemicals in Armor All would react with the windshield, or something on the windshield, and would cause a haze to appear on the inside of the windshield. The strange thing about this is that the haze only appeared when it started to get dark, so mechanics had no clue about what customers were talking about because in the day the windshield was perfectly clear.
- Radio: the radios installed in the 1999 Volkswagen Passat had terrible reception. At first, the Volkswagen manufactures tried to dismiss these claims and suggested that the poor reception may be due to customers hanging items on the car antennas. Of course, this was not acceptable and after many more complaints, the manufacturers realized that there were problems with the electronic connection for the radios in the Passat.
With the exception of the error with the braking system the other problems reported with the 1999 Volkswagen Passat were minor. And the overall improvements made to the model in its 1999 launch far outweigh these problems. A few of the adjustments made for the 1999 Passat include a sleek new trim which made it a more charming and stylish vehicle.
This new eye-catching design was enough to get customers’ attention, but the designers didn’t stop there. To keep up with the times, several gadgets were added to the 1999 Volkswagen Passat. These include Power heated mirrors, keyless entry system, lighted entry system, trip computer, remote truck release and power door locks. In addition to these there were improvements to the safety features and a host of optional extras available. All of these enhancements made the 1999 Volkswagen Passat the start of a very good thing.
